Aloha Everyone!!
My experience in Tonga is evolving every moment. My first month or so was consumed by the water, and the under water world…..so incredibly amazing is so many ways. (i have shared some photos here with you).
The last month i have been focusing more of my time with the plant kingdom. The forest and jungle on this island intrigue me in so many ways. The energy around these plants is like nothing i have seen, perhaps it’s the pure rawness of the land, water, and soil here. I have been journaling and documenting some of the experiences i have had, however find a lack of words to fully describe my discoveries.
During this time (full moon approaching) i have learned a lot about the ocean tides, how plants and animals react to the changing energies from the moon. In Tonga this full moon in Nov marks the Turtles coming to land to lay their eggs. The turtles in Tonga have now been declared an in dangered species, and protected by the government. The problem is that the Government does little to enforce laws protecting the turtles and their reproduction. That along with the predators such as pigs, rats, birds, and humans, these poor creatures have their challenges in survival.
With that being said i am working with the sea and wild life organizations to study and protect the turtles while they lay their eggs. If all goes will i will travel with the others to study the turtles. This will entail traveling to several islands, walking and camping out on various beaches at night to locate nests, and turtle behaviour. 51 to 52 days later the turtle eggs will hatch.
The longer i stay here the more opportunities present themselves. I still have not received my official visitor visa extension (expired on Nov 3rd) from the government. Any type of “business” takes for ever, if it happens at all!! Persistence and patience are a never ending virtue here…i am getting a lot of practice.
Must sign off for now.
Sending much Mahalo to Everyone
Shelly
